A huge amount of hard working and thinking went into preparing work for Common Cause, the exhibition at Brantwood currently showcasing Martin’s work. Reflections on how people respond to art and craft; how people attribute value and meaning to beauty and utility.

Martin kept returning to the idea that the real artist is the observer and not the creator. It is their response that defines the work. Using a vessel for a spiritual ceremony imbues it with different meaning and value to

With this in mind he approached a photographer, Euan Adamson and a poet, Geoff Cox and asked them to create their response to his work, and practice. These conversations eventually lead to the creation of Confluences, a book of place, pictures, pots and poems.

On June the 14th Martin and his co-authors invite you to join them at Brantwood, Coniston to share the story of the exhibition that became a book. The evening starts at 5pm with a guided tour of Common Cause, providing insight into how they worked together. The tour will be accompanied by music from Jen Hucknall, played on the fabulous piano in the drawing room.

You are then invited to join them all in the Terrace for a drink and supper. In The Terrace Martin will give demonstrations of some of the making techniques involved in the work, Geoff will read some of his poems and Euan will showcase and talk through some of his favourite images. There will obviously be plenty of opportunities for chat and questions too.

This unique evening will cost you £19 which includes entry into Brantwood, the food and the entertainment, book your ticket through the Brantwood website.
