Bog Oak – In 2017 award winning designer of furniture art Daniel Lacey was asked would he be interested in making furniture from a Bog Oak that had been found at Bowness on Solway.

He was very excited as this wood is rare and almost unheard of in the North of England.

He knew that we made glazes using wood ashes and local materials. He saved all the sawdust and off cuts and brought us 80kg of Bog Oak to burn. We built a special kiln and created 1.5kg of usable ash.  Bog Oaks are formed when an Oak tree falls into a peat bog as it is being formed.

“Our” Bog Oak was about 275 years old when it fell into the Solway Peat Bog as it was being formed 8000 years ago.

Peat bogs form some of England’s most scarce habitat and provide a unique home for domestic and migrating species.

Like us Daniel passionately believes in treading lightly on the planet and this collaboration celebrates our shared philosophy.

In March 2018 at The Cumbria Life Homes and Gardens this unique collaboration is being  showcased for the first time as we jointly presented each other’s work. More work will be on display during our Joint Open Studio in Langholm for Spring Fling
