Neriagi Bowl 2
MARTIN MILES-MOORE

This unique piece was hand thrown on a wheel by Martin Miles-Moore in the Miles-Moore Ceramics Studio at Brathay Hall in the beautiful English Lake District.  It is glazed in a Copper Red glaze. Copper Red glazes are those that contain Copper Oxide that was been fired in such a way as to remove oxygen and create a red as opposed to a blue or green coloured oxide. Neriagi is a Japanese word that refers to the specific technique of combining different coloured clays in a wheel thrown piece of work. The two ( or more) clays are layered and wedged together , firmly enough to remove air bubbles, but not so much as to create a muddy effect. When this combination clay is throw the spirals that are created are unique and almost impossible to influence. The provides each piece with a unique character.

SIOBHAN MILES-MOORE

This unique piece was handbuilt by Siobhan Miles-Moore in the Miles-Moore Ceramics Studio at Brathay Hall in the beautiful English Lake District.  Siobhan calls her spherical and semi spherical forms Microcsoms, because all of them represent wider stories or responses. They explore perspective, encouraging us to consider internal and external surfaces and our favourite view of this intersection. Hipping Hall style pieces use Heamatite Iron Ore from the Florence Mine in Egremont for exterior decoration and the interior is gilded with Copper Leaf. This combination has become known as the Hipping Hall Style because this gorgeous restaurant on the Yorkshire/Cumbria/Lancashire border selected it for their tables, The dining room at Hipping Hall was originally a Blacksmith's; where iron was formed in the copper glow of forge, a great example of how Miles-Moore Ceramics use materials to tell stories about a sense of place.

TEA BOWLS
CEREMONIAL VESSELS FOR TEA

A Tea Bowl is chosen by a Tea Master to integrate with the overall mood they are trying to create in a tea room.

This mood must reflect the season, the purpose of the tea ceremony, the guests and the host of the ceremony as well as the type of tea being used.

The form of a Tea Bowl is determined by its function.

Some of the elements of its function are ergonomic, how the bowl is handled by both Tea Master and guest.

Some of the elements are spiritual, how the Bowl links the participants back to the natural world and its’ energies.

It is easy to see that there are times when a bowl transcends it’s simple practical function and becomes something altogether different.

All over the world Teabowls are selected for the way in which they speak. Ceremonial vessel or art object, functional bowl or encapsulated spirituality, the relationship between a Tea Bowl, their creators and their admirers is a complex and subtle one.

We were lucky enough to meet Euan through Spring Fling, when Daniel Lacey was kind enough to invite us to share his studio. From our very first shoot with Euan we were amazed by his understated calm and technical excellence; as we have worked with him more we have learned that we can trust him to see and create images that we love that invite real consideration of the work. EN-RICHED STUDIO EXPERIENCE

welcome...

Born out of a joyous, catalytic meeting of like minds and in response to the question, 'how can our pots tell their story' the En-Riched Studio Experience illustrates what happens when creativity is given the room to breathe and to evolve organically.

It encourages you to meet the artists, explore their art, their inspirations, collaborations, and process. It welcomes you to an entity that showcases people, place, and space.

We'd love to know your thoughts and ideas about your visit, you can share them in our guest book.

Future plans

Like any new home we have plans to expand. We are currently building an EAST MEETS WEST room in which we learn about what inspires Martin's work.

Once restrictions lift, we will be able to travel to locations from which the raw materials come. This will complete the Origins / Discovery room where you can see the process from digging the ground to final work of art.

We are experimenting with Augmented Reality too, so you can view pieces in your own home. Initially for commission pieces it will offer a fantastic opportunity to share the work as it evolves.

ABOUT this experience

welcome...
to an innovative online platform with heart and soul. A place where you can not only engage with art, but you can also meet the artists and immerse yourself in their inspirations, their process and all the location has to offer.

This development is born out of a mutually catalytic relationship between ceramic artists Martin and Siobhan Miles-Moore and Rich Stevens, Digital Designer. The warmth, excitement and energy in their dynamic is captured in this interactive yet tranquil virtual space.

You can view and purchase the works on show in the Gallery and even book a live appointment with the artists to discuss commissions and have a one-to-one guided tour.

Along with the Gallery the space includes the Confluences Room which captures the concept of a collaborative book, a cinema room, and a working studio.

However, this is an ever-evolving world with further developments being lovingly constructed.

It truly is a virtual destination of choice. One that is open to you whenever you want to escape to a creative and inspirational location. It is online curation that is people and sensory focussed. It wants to welcome and nourish you. Enjoy.

ABOUT RICH - THE DIGITAL ARCHITECT

The virtual space you are now exploring has been hand built by Rich Stevens. Here he gives an insight into his experience, drive, and his collaborative bond with Miles-Moore Ceramics.

“My dad was never afraid of giving me real tools as a child and I have always loved making and creating.
I enjoyed creating with my hands but found digital tools gave me another way to bring ideas to life and share visions, which would otherwise be too expensive or impractical to build. I also am cursed with looking at things and always wanting to improve them, and that now includes the way we interact digitally.”

Rich started his career as an apprentice with Rolls Royce when he was 16 and is now Creative Director of Design Real who provide conceptual product, automotive and user experience design services.
His endless enthusiasm delivers inspirational results all driven by a mindset that converts ‘I don’t know’ to ‘I need to find out’. A curiosity driven work ethic offering boundless potential.

He also brings the value of emotional investment to digital concepts in the belief that technology can enhance the physical world and is not a separate experience from it, that digital physical fusions will become part of our daily lives.

The experience you see here is the result of a joyous and catalytic meeting of like minds. Rich explains:
“Martin and Siobhan’s accomplished skills set, vision to engage and broaden the way that is expressed, was like blue touchpaper to a digital creative mind.

Can this be done in an empathic and emotional way that does not simply present the artist’s work but immerses the viewer in their world.

Art is not transactional but an emotional journey, this experimental collaboration is feeling its way forward to create a new way of engaging and immersing people in that world”.

The concept is ever evolving with further brainstorms becoming virtual realities. What is apparent is how much consideration has been given to the nuance that takes this innovation beyond a ‘Tour’ creating a complete ‘360’ brand immersion.

Part ‘day out’, part gallery shop, part story telling…always with heart.

Rich can be contacted at rich@designreal.co.uk

Future plans

Rich Stevens of Design Real elaborates on what you can expect to find ongoing behind the other virtual doors.

“Like any new home we have plans to expand. We are currently building a Japanese Tea Room in which we learn about the Tea ceremonies and what inspires Martin's work.
Once restrictions lift, we will be able to travel to locations from which the raw materials come. This will complete the Origins / Discovery room where you can see the process from digging the ground to final work of art.
We are experimenting with Augmented Reality too, so you can view pieces in your own home. Initially for commission pieces it offers a fantastic opportunity to share the work as it evolves”.

This bowl is one of those collaborative works and was inspired by the colours and textures of the water that used to drive our woollen industry.

Out of bad things come good things. In the spring of 2018 Siobhan’s Sister died and so did a talented young local Chef; Matt Campbell. In trying to create our own positive legacy for them both we reached out to the Brathay Trust to see if we could help support their work building resilience in young people using creativity. A year later we had moved our studio into an amazing cabin in the woods, overlooking Windermere and are now involved in both “Matt’s” 3.7 Resilience Programme, The Future for Heroes programme and creative fundraising with them.

Talking to Rich Berry we had mentioned that we wanted to try and tell the stories of our pots from different perspectives and he talked about a collaboration he had done with a poet. We had already met our studio neighbour Geoff and enjoyed chatting to him. We were delighted to find out they were one and the same and the idea for Confluences The Book was born. Geoff has a canny ability to pull together words and images together helping embed our work into a wider place based cultural landscape.

Naomi Saka – DIGITAL ARTIST

We have only met Naomi once, when Rich invited us to a mind-blowing day at Bentley HQ. Being introduced to her three-dimensional moving immersive light sculptures that tell the stories or journeys really gave us food for thought. We have a dream of one day collaborating on a completely joint exhibition joining Naomi’s love of Japanese folklore with the stories and intent behind Martin’s Tea bowls. But life and lock down has put that on hold for now. We were really proud that Naomi worked with us on Confluences at Farfield Mill and created a Journeyscape from film of the inspiration process and creation of key pieces in that exhibition.

We have great friends and some of them have children, great children. Which is how we know one half of Bondax, which makes us feel very “cool”. We first started talking to Adam about some form of collaboration when he came along to a meet the artists event for Confluences The Book, at Brantwood. When we were working on Confluences at Farfield Mill we realized that we were increasingly excited about telling the stories of our pieces and the places that create them through every sense, and we had not got music. Adam is also exploring place related sound and was almost as excited as us.

We meet a lot of lovely people in our lives. There are some who display kindness and care above and beyond the role they are playing. Being asked to take part in an exhibition in Arteria felt like an honour. Sharon, their manager, managed our chaos with grace and patience dealing with mild hysteria as Siobhan dropped off, or collected work on her way to or from visiting her Dad in hospital. sharon burns – artist/wordsmith/marketeer/curator/legend

When we heard she was leaving Arteria we wanted to stay in touch, little knowing that she would volunteer to help manage our chaos into a new studio experience. Lucky us.

rich berry – film maker

Working with great Chefs has led to some interesting and unexpected introductions. When Kev Tickle (then of the Forest Side) was invited to prepare some Arctic Char for a film being made by Henry Iddon and Rich Berry, Martin was invited to make char pots as part of the production. Rich then got dragged into Siobhan’s Copper in our Veins Project. His endless enthusiasm and focus and ability to absorb new subject matter is amazing.

We have all attended meetings that we had high hopes for that failed to deliver.

When Flock invites you to a meeting you can be sure that something great will come out of it!

Even we did not expect it to result in a practice altering, paradigm shifting meeting though.
Rich Steven’s knowledge and enthusiasm has allowed us to explore ideas that had previously felt like distant dreams. Extending our understanding of our own practice and for us to make it possible to share the immersive nature of our approach more widely. We ban caffeine at all our meetings for fear we might actually explode with excitement.

Francesca Jones – artist

Quite a lot of great things in our lives start with food and drink. So, when we got a visit from Laura and Daz, owners of Ambleside’s new Japanese Deli and restaurant, Auradaze; we could not have been more delighted; geeking out about Japanese ceramics AND food, perfect. Fast forward two years and Laura volunteered her artist daughter to paint a portrait of Martin working at his wheel as a belated 60th Birthday Present. It is such a perfect image of Martin in his happy place that we needed to build it in to our Confluence space.

EN-RICHED STUDIO EXPERIENCE
WELCOME

Born out of a joyous, catalytic meeting of like minds and in response to the question, 'how can our pots tell their story' the EN-RICHED STUDIO EXPERIENCE illustrates what happens when creativity is given the room to breathe and to evolve organically.

FLOCK – PR & EVENTS

We knew half of Flock before there was Flock and Sophia Newton was the person who secured and wrote the first piece on Martin’s work for Cumbria Life in 2017. Our friendship with Janett and Sophia sustains us and their professionalism, enthusiasm and their events have been a key part of our success. Our lives are better and more connected because of these fab humans.

At all the best Cumbrian networking events the smiling presence of Victoria discretely captures the joy and the gravitas, the smiles and the tears of the people. During lockdown her whole village was captured for posterity by her kind lens.

So, we were especially delighted to have her come and capture some of our Date Night Dining Ware being graced with the fabulous food of Irini Tzortzoglou. Even in the freezing cold she kept us all smiling and relaxed.

As people making a living from their creativity, we know we do our best work when part of a creative ecosystem. Being surrounded by other creatives and their talents, inspires us, and allows us to thrive. With the help of these creative confluences, we know that we can build richer layers of interest, stories, and connection. It also makes being creative a lot more fun.

So, without Flock we would not have met Rich or Sheenah. Sheenah has been the competent quiet cheerful powerhouse behind a film camera at many events we have attended. She also makes us laugh, a lot, in all the right places.

We were lucky enough to meet Euan through Spring Fling when Daniel Lacey www.daniellacey.com was kind enough to invite us to share his studio. From our very first shoot with Euan, we were amazed by his understated calm and technical excellence; as we have worked with him more, we have learned that we can trust him to see and create images that we love that invite real consideration of the work.

Working on Confluences the Book would have been unthinkable without him.
